About
The longer version.
I'm Gaurang - pronounced Gaw-rung. I spent seven years building production software, and at some point the ML side of things started pulling my attention in a way that felt worth following. So I decided to find out properly, which is how I ended up at UBC doing a Master of Data Science.
My engineering background is in Java microservices, CI/CD, and keeping systems running under pressure. At UKG I progressed from developer to lead, owning core services, modernizing infrastructure, and mentoring junior engineers through the process. Before that, Ericsson and Apple put me in environments where the margin for error was essentially zero. At Ericsson I worked close to hardware, converting MATLAB prototypes into production C++ for radio firmware deployed at live customer sites. At Apple I optimized chipset drivers and cut automated test runtimes from 65 seconds to 17.
MDS added the ability to think statistically and work across the full ML stack - from wrangling messy data and training models to building reproducible pipelines and deploying interactive tools. I care about models that work in production, not just ones that look good in a notebook.
For my capstone I partnered with Educational Testing Service (ETS) to build an equity-focused education dashboard processing 1.7M+ PISA student records across 81 countries and 3 assessment cycles. Not every project has a clear line between the technical work and a real decision someone makes. This one did.
I'm open to ML/AI engineering and data science roles - hybrid or remote. If you're working on something interesting, let's talk.
